Despite mounting pressure and a growing chorus of voices demanding his resignation, embattled New York Congressman George Santos has remained defiant, refusing to step down from his position. While acknowledging the likelihood of his expulsion from the House of Representatives, Santos has maintained a defiant stance, asserting that his departure will occur only on his own terms.
“I am not going to resign,” Santos declared in a recent interview. “If I resign, I admit everything that’s on that report.”
Santos’s reference to the report alludes to the findings of the House Ethics Committee, which concluded that Santos had engaged in a pattern of embellishment and fabrication regarding his education, employment, and charitable work. The committee recommended that Santos be expelled from Congress, a move that would require a two-thirds majority vote in the House.
Despite the overwhelming evidence against him, Santos has shown no signs of remorse or contrition. Instead, he has lashed out at his critics, accusing them of engaging in a witch hunt and attempting to silence him.
“They can expel me all they want,” Santos said. “It’s done when I say it’s done.”
Santos’s defiant stance has further inflamed his critics, who view his refusal to resign as a sign of arrogance and disrespect for the institution of Congress. They argue that Santos’s actions have tarnished the reputation of the House and that he is unfit to serve as a representative of the people.
“George Santos has disgraced himself and the House of Representatives,” said Rep. Robert Garcia, a California Democrat. “He should resign immediately, but if he doesn’t, we will expel him.”
The fate of George Santos remains uncertain. While he has defied calls for resignation, his expulsion from Congress appears imminent. Only time will tell whether Santos will choose to bow out gracefully or face the humiliation of being ejected from the House.
